Balcony retiling, doorway transitions and exterior tile suitability

If water ponds or reaches the room below, another layer of tiles is not a diagnosis or a waterproofing repair. The existing build-up may need investigation and removal before the tiled finish can be agreed. Our balcony waterproofing service explains the connected membrane and drainage assessment.

For a strata property, share the authorised contact and access arrangements before booking. We describe the proposed work without deciding ownership boundaries or who must pay.

Balcony strip out and the membrane interface

Tile removal can damage a membrane that appears sound from above. We agree whether the existing tiled build-up is retained or removed, and where a waterproofing assessment is needed before installation. Covering a wet or unstable base with new tiles does not resolve the source. The interface between the prepared base, membrane and adhesive is confirmed as part of the connected work.

Door thresholds and outlet access

We plan the finished doorway height using the tile thickness, adhesive bed and required base preparation. We assess the threshold, drainage direction and outlet access together, and define the coping and exposed edge details. Your quote sets out the sequence and expected access restrictions, allowing for weather and material curing.

Outdoor porcelain tiles, drainage falls and balcony thresholds

We compare outdoor porcelain tile dimensions and thickness with the planned falls, cuts and doorway transition.

Check the selected product’s exterior-use and slip information; a matt appearance alone does not establish grip. Movement joints must remain distinct from ordinary grout lines.

Outdoor porcelain installation after rain

After rain, apparent surface dryness does not confirm that the retained tile bed is ready for membrane or adhesive. We assess moisture and old coatings against the selected product requirements.

The selected membrane, adhesive, grout and sealant set different requirements for application, rain exposure and return to use. Weather, substrate moisture and protection of the work area affect the programme. We agree those stages for your job instead of promising a fixed number of dry days after every shower.

Balcony base preparation and outdoor tile handover

  1. Assess the accessible surface, its condition and the intended finish.
  2. Confirm preparation, material responsibility, boundaries and access in a written scope.
  3. Prepare the base and complete the agreed installation or joint renewal, coordinating connected work.
  4. Explain cleaning, curing and return to use at handover. Timing follows the selected materials and site conditions.
