Comparing Waterproofing and Tiling Quotes

Our itemised quote sets out the work area, preparation, materials and finish included in your project, along with exclusions and separate trade arrangements. When comparing quotes, use the same repair boundary and finish: local joint renewal, tile replacement and membrane renewal involve different work.

Publisher: Ellis Services Group. General information for planning a job; the actual scope and materials need assessment.

Start with the same work area and repair boundary

Give each provider the same room, symptoms, surface condition and intended finish. Confirm whether the proposal is for local joint renewal, tile replacement, membrane work or a broader renovation. A surface repair and a rebuild should not be compared as if they deliver the same work.

Use the shower repair options guide to distinguish grout, flexible seals and membrane work. For installation, floor preparation and transitions and splashback layout and junctions identify details that affect the scope.

Before accepting a quote

  • Compare the same work area, repair boundary and intended finish.
  • Ask for unclear inclusions, allowances and exclusions in writing.
  • Confirm who can approve changes and how cost or timing changes are recorded.
  • Agree the handover records and return-to-use instructions for this scope.

We use these items to define your project scope, with inclusions, allowances and exclusions explained in the written quote. Photographs can help the first discussion; we assess accessible conditions on site and explain where opening the area is needed.

Unknown findings and written variations

Removing tiles or linings can expose damage that was concealed during the initial assessment. We identify the known preparation and assumptions in your quote, then explain any further investigation needed before additional work is agreed.

We explain any additional or changed work, its cost and its effect on timing, and obtain written agreement before it proceeds. We also confirm who can approve the change, whether that is you, the owner or an authorised property contact.

Compare the programme and access restrictions

Check the sequence of preparation, waterproofing, tiling, finishing and separate trade work. Material availability and concealed findings can affect the programme. Ask how the room will be protected, which routes remain available and when each type of use can resume.

The drying and curing guide explains why recoat, ready-to-tile, full cure and return-to-water stages are different. A shorter quoted duration is only useful if the same scope and required waiting stages are accounted for.

Agree job-specific handover and warranty terms

Before accepting, ask which records will be supplied for your actual scope: for example, the agreed work description, selected material details, available progress records, care instructions and applicable warranty terms. What is appropriate depends on the work. Do not assume every project includes the same documents or an independent certificate.

An installer’s assessment or handover inspection is not independent certification. If an independent inspection or a particular approval is needed, confirm who provides it and its scope separately.

Workmanship warranty terms relate to the installer’s work; product warranty terms relate to the manufacturer’s product and its conditions. Ask who is responsible for each, what is covered or excluded, and how a concern is reported. Neither a product name nor an ABN establishes a fixed warranty period or a construction licence.

For broader work, see bathroom renovation waterproofing. Short purchasing questions are in the quotes and delivery FAQs; Contact Ellis is the enquiry route for a job-specific assessment.

Voluntary warranty terms do not replace applicable consumer guarantees. See the ACCC guidance on warranties for further reading.
