Bathroom Renovation Waterproofing

We bring bathroom strip-out, base preparation, waterproofing and retiling into one coordinated project. Whether you are refreshing the finish or changing the layout, we plan the levels, drainage and trade handovers around your new bathroom.

We inspect the exposed base, repair the substrate within the agreed scope and coordinate drainage, membrane installation and the new tile finish. We confirm fixture positions, tile thickness, floor levels and thresholds before construction.
You can contact Ellis before choosing or buying tiles. We confirm your selection and its effect on levels and drainage before the screed and waterproofing details are finalised.
Before removal, we agree with you which fittings and finishes will stay: the shower position, vanity, doorway and adjoining floor. We check the waste position, floor falls and space for the new finish, including how tile thickness and format affect the build-up, cuts and drainage details.
Once the base is exposed, we check its condition before covering it again. Loose bedding, damaged lining or an unsuitable base can change the preparation needed. The written scope records the known work and how any concealed damage will be assessed, priced and approved.
For an existing shower leak or limited repair, see bathroom waterproofing and shower leak repairs.
Preparation, waterproofing and installation
- Confirm the layout. We agree drainage, tiles, floor levels and the shower threshold.
- Prepare the base. We inspect the open substrate, repair and prepare the agreed area. Additional work requires written approval before it proceeds.
- Install and check. We install the selected system, schedule curing and complete the required inspection or testing.
- Finish and hand over. We complete the bathroom tile installation, coordinate later fittings and provide care and return-to-use instructions.
For apartments and units, we confirm access, any building approvals, shared drainage arrangements and permitted work hours before installation.
Plumbing and electrical work are separate trade scopes. Before setting dates, we agree with you who handles waste changes, fixtures and the shower screen, and what is included in the quote. At each handover, we confirm the completed area, readiness for the next trade and any outstanding base or drainage work. Later fittings and drilling need to preserve the membrane details.
For an occupied home, plan how the room will be isolated, where materials and removed finishes can pass through, and which bathroom will be available during the work. In a unit, confirm the building contact and access arrangements early so common-area protection and deliveries can be organised.
Your itemised bathroom renovation scope
We set out the removal boundary, reinstated finish, base preparation, separate trades, access and waste arrangements in your quote. If strip-out exposes additional damage, we confirm the changed work, cost and timing with you in writing before it proceeds. Our quote comparison and handover guide explains the questions to ask.
The table below brings these inclusions and handovers into one breakdown.
| Stage | Included when specified in your quote |
|---|---|
| Removal and protection | Tiles, bedding and fittings to remove; waste disposal; protection of adjoining rooms and common areas. |
| Substrate and drainage | Known preparation and falls; concealed damage awaiting inspection; plumbing changes and who completes them. |
| Waterproofing | Areas, selected system, junctions and penetrations; curing and agreed inspection or testing; records supplied. |
| Tiling | Owner or contractor tile supply, size and thickness, laying, grout, flexible joints and edge finishes. |
| Reinstatement and trades | Fixture and screen supply or refitting, plumbing and electrical coordination, cleaning and return-to-use instructions. |
Our waterproofing services cover other exposed surfaces, and our tiling service catalogue includes wall, floor and outdoor tiling.
Plan bathroom downtime and cost factors
Plan around separate membrane, adhesive, grout and sealant stages rather than a surface that only looks dry. The drying and curing guide explains why readiness to tile and readiness for normal use are different decisions.
The room can be unavailable through removal, base repairs, membrane application, curing, tiling and final fitting. We set the proposed sequence after assessment and confirm when each stage is ready for the next. Product requirements, site conditions and trade availability affect the dates; there is no single duration that suits every renovation.
Compare tile quantities and cuts alongside the preparation above; retiling an already exposed room covers different work from a quote that includes strip-out.
Handover, care and return to use
We review the agreed finish, junctions and any outstanding items, and provide the care and return-to-use instructions for the installed materials. Confirm what installation records are included and keep the product information with the quote.
Later fittings need care around completed surfaces. Share the relevant installation details with anyone fitting accessories or screens, and raise any uncertain fixing position before drilling.
