Courtyard Tiling

Make more of your courtyard or alfresco with tiles suited to outdoor living. We prepare the base, plan drainage and set out the tiles around doors, paths and steps for a connected outdoor finish.

Courtyard and alfresco tiling with drainage and movement joints

Outdoor tile selection is more than choosing a colour. We check the proposed material for the location and use, alongside the available product information, cleaning needs and edge details. A textured appearance alone does not establish slip performance.

Movement joints and connections to the building need a deliberate detail rather than being covered with ordinary grout. Any required waterproofing is assessed for the particular construction; not every outdoor area uses the same system.

Alfresco tile drainage and adjoining levels

Surface water can arrive from adjoining paving as well as fall directly on the tiles. We assess that runoff and the relationship between courtyard levels, indoor floors and drainage points. A tile overlay changes finished heights and may affect clearance at doors. Preparation and any level changes are agreed before the layout, with access to drains kept part of the finish.

Exterior tile suitability and movement joints

Existing cracks need assessment before covering. We plan the cut layout and movement details for the selected format, with steps identified separately in the written scope.

Outdoor porcelain for courtyards, alfresco areas and steps

Stone-look and textured porcelain offer different visual finishes; their appearance alone does not determine outdoor suitability.

For large outdoor tiles, we plan cuts at posts and outlets around the agreed falls and movement joints.

Courtyard puddles and the tiled surface fall

A clear surface grate does not prove the drainage pipe is clear or has enough capacity. Puddles can also relate to low spots in the tile bed, adjoining ground levels or the way water reaches the outlet. Note where water collects, whether the outlet backs up and how long the puddle remains after rain stops.

Suspected stormwater pipe blockage or damage needs separate drainage assessment before retiling is agreed. New grout or a slip-resistant tile cannot correct an unsuitable fall.

Outdoor porcelain, pavers and exposed surface care

We assess the actual exterior material and specification. Stone-look describes appearance; terracotta may identify fired clay or only a product colour; bluestone is a stone trade name that needs the actual stone type confirmed. Outdoor porcelain, natural stone pavers and fired-clay products have different product instructions. Check that the material and finish suit the actual weather exposure, wet walking surface and cleaning routine.

The tile thickness and intended installation method need to fit the base, falls, doorway levels and step edges. A porcelain paver is not automatically a direct substitute for a bonded tile. Send the supplier specification with the area you want finished so we can assess preparation, edge details and care before confirming the work.

Courtyard tile preparation, installation and curing

  1. Assess the accessible surface, its condition and the intended finish.
  2. Confirm preparation, material responsibility, boundaries and access in a written scope.
  3. Prepare the base and complete the agreed installation or joint renewal, coordinating connected work.
  4. Explain cleaning, curing and return to use at handover. Timing follows the selected materials and site conditions.
