Wall tile substrate preparation and feature tile alignment

For wet bathroom walls, use the bathroom tiling scope. Around benchtops and outlets, our kitchen splashback tiling page covers that separate room-specific preparation.

Wall tile substrate preparation

Old paint, adhesive residues and damaged wall lining can affect the suitability of the base. We assess what needs removal or preparation and whether the wall can support the proposed tile size and weight. A new tiled surface should not conceal unresolved dampness or a loose coating. The quote identifies the accessible wall area and any lining work included.

Feature tile alignment and visible edges

The selected format changes the balance of cuts at corners, openings and terminations. Share tile dimensions and the intended pattern so we can agree alignment, edge trims and visible cuts before installation. Fittings and outlets need a coordinated sequence with the relevant trades. For wet walls, membrane preparation is confirmed separately from the decorative or practical tile finish.

Ceramic, porcelain and mosaic feature wall finishes

Ceramic wall tiles, porcelain features and mosaics create different patterns across feature strips and adjoining surfaces. We set out these changes before fixing.

Glass mosaics need compatible adhesive and grout, with attention to backing, visible adhesive marks and sheet joints.

Wall glaze, water spots and stone-look finishes

We compare ceramic wall tiles, porcelain wall tiles and glass mosaics by the actual body, surface and backing. Smooth glazed finishes can simplify wiping; strong relief and extra mosaic joints add detail to the cleaning routine. Dark, glossy and textured samples may show water deposits differently, so compare a sample where it will be used.

Marble-look porcelain is not natural marble, and mosaic describes a format rather than one material. Natural stone needs its exact type and care instructions confirmed before agreeing fixing and maintenance.
